Improved athletic performance – by reducing pain and restoring the tissues tone, texture and length, will increase range of motion, improve stride length, strength, vertical jump, club speed and other sports related motions, allowing the athlete to perform more efficiently and effectively. It is used in every athletic level, ranging from the weekend warriors, amateurs, Olympians, and professional athletes to help enhance their sport performance.
Sport performance care acts to improve an athlete’s performance. Difficult training regimes, repetitive motions (swimming, running, cycling, skating, swinging, lifting etc.), and overworked muscles all place a great deal of stress on an athlete's body. Subtle or gross changes in the physiology of an athlete’s body can have tremendous impact on the time and effort required to perform an activity, and help the athlete recover from such training regimes and repetitive motions.
Repetitive motion, constant tension, and pressure often result in inflammation and swelling of soft tissue. If training load exceeds the tissue ability to adapt, injuries will eventually occur; this is known as microtrauma. The body responds to this inflammation by laying down scar tissue (cross bridged fibers within the tissue) in an attempt to stabilize the affected area. The tissues tone, texture and length become altered which leads to:
- Restricts motion – by the shortened weak, tense and tight tissues.
- Reduces circulation – from the increased pressure and tension from edema and cellular hypoxia.
- Inhibits nerve function.
- Causes ongoing friction and pressure.
- Results in the production of yet more cross fibers and adhesions across the inflamed soft tissues.
- Can cause a variety of symptoms, which can include pain and overall hinder the athletes’ performance.
- This begins the self perpetuating CUMULATIVE INJURY CYCLE -
Even though physical training factors can be modified, the biomechanical restrictions that have been created in the athletes body are seldom addressed. This leads to future injuries, slower recovery time inhibiting the athlete from reaching his or her full performance potential and goals.
Through a specific exam and history, the correct structures involved can be identified, allowing for the best and most specific treatment to the presenting condition. This is extremely important because different athletes may present with identical symptoms, but each athlete may have completely different structures that are impaired or injured.
Effective treatment of any soft tissue injury (ligaments, tendons, muscles, fascia and nerves) requires an alteration in tissue structure to break up the restrictive cross-fiber adhesions and to restore normal structure and function to the affected soft tissue areas.
