Now that winter has passed and almost all of the snow has melted, trees in our neighborhoods are bursting with buds and emitting high levels of pollens, causing people with allergies to experience seasonal symptoms: sneezing, wheezing, itching, swelling, and coughing. The budding trees will be followed by grasses and flowers, all great signs of spring, but they bring with them allergy symptoms for a significant number of adults and children.

Allergy symptoms are evidence of a reaction from our immune systems against allergens like pollen. Dr. Ryley Layden and Dr. Katie Layden of RAK Chiropractic are well trained in approaching allergy problems with holistic solutions. They can assess symptoms and work collaboratively with patients to address allergies from a multi-faceted perspective, considering diet, exercise, and sleep patterns, all important factors for building a strong immune system.

Proper spinal alignment can also contribute to a healthy immune system. A musculoskeletal assessment and spinal manipulation, if necessary, can improve overall health. Drs. Layden are knowledgeable practitioners with years of experience helping patients with challenges like allergies that detract from full effectiveness at work, school, and sports.

Chiropractic care doesn’t have to replace traditional medicine and drug therapies for allergies. The staff at RAK can develop a strategy for reducing allergy symptoms that complements other medical approaches for adults and children. If your allergy medication isn’t working as well as you hoped it would, contact the RAK Chiropractic office in Rochester, MN and schedule an appointment for an allergy assessment, the first step in developing a full defense against spring allergies.

According to the National Institute of Health, 12 percent of the U.S. population suffers from migraines. These moderately to severely painful headaches are often accompanied by sensitivity to light and sound, nausea, and vomiting. Migraines can last from a couple of hours to 2 – 4 days and they can affect men, women, and children. Some people report more frequent migraine headaches in the spring, possibly due to the additional light and increased allergies.

Dr. Ryley Layden and Dr. Katie Layden of RAK Chiropractic in Rochester, MN are experienced practitioners who are prepared to help prevent and treat migraine headaches. Clinical studies have shown that chiropractic treatment can bring relief. One in five people who suffer from migraines have reported up to a 90% reduction in migraines after a series of chiropractic treatments, and up to 70% of the patients who seek chiropractic care experience some relief.

The doctors at RAK Chiropractic take a holistic approach to treating patients. In addition to evaluating and treating musculoskeletal alignment issues that may be causing or aggravating migraines, Drs. Ryley and Katie Layden review nutrition, exercise and sleep patterns with their patients and make recommendations that can reduce the frequency and severity of migraine headaches. Dietary recommendations can include reducing certain food additives like monosodium glutamate (MSG), highly processed foods, and certain dairy products and fruits.

Migraines are tough to beat. Consider adding chiropractic treatment to your arsenal of solutions especially if you experience side effects from the drugs typically prescribed for migraines or the medications don’t work for you. Let the doctors at RAK Chiropractic in Rochester, MN review your situation and provide personalized recommendations and treatment focused on preventing or reducing your migraines so you can more fully enjoy this spring.

A pulled muscle that doesn’t get better? A sore back, knee, hip, elbow, or shoulder that keeps flaring up? Drs Ryley and Katie Layden at RAK Chiropractic in Rochester, MN are experts at relieving relentless injuries. Are you experiencing pain, numbness, weakness or reduced range of motion?

Whether the joint or muscle pain originated during a sports event, while working on a home improvement project, occurred after a car accident, or resulted from getting up out of a chair at the office or off of the couch at home, chiropractic assessment and treatment by the doctors at RAK can get you on a path to recovery.

Doctors Layden at RAK Chiropractic will develop a treatment plan that will incorporate the best treatment options available for your individual situation. Kinesio® Taping is one option they may recommend. This unique, effective method activates your own body’s healing mechanisms.

Kinesio® Taping provides stability to joints and muscles around the clock without impending circulation or range of motion. The taping is used to reduce inflammation and pain. Kinesiology tape can also expedite the removal of the byproducts of fatigued, overused muscles that contribute to stiffness and pain. Recovery is quicker and more complete. Often athletes can remain active while recovering.

If the injury is older and the muscles have weakened, Drs. Layden can apply Kinesio® Taping to strengthen muscles and improve and restore muscle tone. Both pediatric and adult patients can benefit from this therapy. This treatment is especially effective for infants and children with hypotonia that limits their capability to sit up and crawl.

Don’t let a nagging injury keep you from resuming the sports you enjoy. Don’t put up with a sore joint or muscle, even chronic pain that you think is beyond resolution. Contact RAK Chiropractic in Rochester, MN for an assessment and development of an individualized treatment plan.

Spring is just around the corner. If you planning on running a marathon, competing in a triathlon, or riding in a century bike event, you are probably starting to train now, or at least starting to think about training. Perhaps tennis is your game. Whatever the sport, carefully planned training can make or break your results.

Drs Ryley and Katie Layden at RAK Chiropractors in Rochester, MN are athletes themselves, so they know that you want to get in shape to win and can’t afford an injury that could put you on the sidelines.

The doctors at RAK Chiropractic can provide stretching education and therapeutic exercises that can improve flexibility, maximize performance and decrease the chance of injury. If previous injuries, especially overuse injuries, are inhibiting performance, Dr. Ryley Layden, an officially certified Active Release Techniques® provider, can administer a non-invasive treatment that eliminates soft-tissue adhesions, alleviates symptoms and improves range of motion.

Overuse can cause scar tissue build-up that inhibits motion. As the scar tissue builds up, muscles become shorter and weaker, tendonitis occurs, resulting in reduced range of motion, loss of strength, and pain. If a nerve is trapped, tingling numbness, and weakness can occur. ART® is a direct, hands-on treatment that uses tension and movement to return tissue to its correct texture and function. Marathon runners, Ironman competitors and NHL and NFL players credit ART® with helping them achieve peak performance.

This season, maximize your performance potential. Schedule an appointment with the experts at RAK Chiropractic for a pre-season exam to check for issues before they become problems. Also meet with Drs. Ryley and Katie Layden to develop reasonable exercise and nutrition plans that will give your spring season training a head start.

Chiropractors have been assisting Olympic athletes for decades. Get Dr. Ryley Layden and Dr. Katie Layden at RAK Chiropractic in Rochester, MN on your team this year.

Many women find relief from the discomforts of pregnancy with expert chiropractic care. Learn more about a few of the common issues addressed by Dr Katie Layden and Dr Ryley Layen of RAK Chiropractic in Rochester, MN.

Many women find relief from the discomforts of pregnancy with expert chiropractic care. Here are a few of the issues commonly addressed by Dr. Katie Layden and Dr. Ryley Layden of RAK Chiropractic in Rochester, MN.

Nausea
One of the earliest and most common discomforts of pregnancy is nausea, often referred to as morning sickness, although it can strike at any time of day or night. Elevated hormones among other changes can cause nauseousness. Wellness consultations with a chiropractor can help pregnant women develop a holistic plan for sleep, diet, hydration and exercise that can help lessen these symptoms. Also spinal alignment can prevent neurological stress that can also contribute to the sensation of nausea.

Back Pain
Approximately 50% of all pregnant woman experience back pain during their pregnancy. Over 70% of the pregnant woman who seek chiropractic therapy find some relief from the treatment. As the fetus grows, the uterus expands, causing additional weight and the mother’s pelvis to tilt. Gentle relaxation and alignment techniques can alleviate pain and discomfort during pregnancy. Studies have also shown that women who have received chiropractic treatment during pregnancy tend to experience less back pain during labor and shorter labor times.

Baby’s alignment and well-being
The added weight and pressures placed on the mother’s pelvis can sometimes crowd the baby. Chiropractic analysis and treatment can help improve spinal and joint alignment in ways that maximize space for the baby. Dr. Katie Layden is certified in the Webster technique, which through analysis and adjustment helps maximize the opportunities for babies to position correctly before labor, thus avoiding the breech position or being horizontal in the uterus. The spinal adjustments reduce stress on the nervous system and encourage biomechanical balance in the mother’s pelvis and surrounding muscles and ligaments, reducing the pressure on the baby and allowing for easier movement. Studies have shown that some babies already in the breech position will turn on their own after Webster technique treatments.

Consult with Drs Ryley and Katie Layden about the best care options available for you and your baby during your pregnancy.

Skiing, snow boarding, ice-skating, playing hockey, sledding, and tobogganing are great ways to be active and have fun throughout the winter. Unfortunately, they also create opportunities for injury. Up to a quarter of all emergency room visits in the winter are due to injuries incurred during participation in winter sports.

Wearing well fitting safety equipment appropriate for the sport is important for preventing injury. Also, gradually building up endurance and exertion when first starting out is important. Many of us eager to shed a few pounds after the holidays or battle cabin fever, push the limits too soon, resulting in sprains, joint pain, and other musculoskeletal injuries.

Dr. Ryley Layden and Dr. Katie Layden of RAK Chiropractic are athletes themselves, so they know the importance of getting back in the game quickly. Their extensive chiropractic training prepares them to help by reducing the pain, numbness, and weakness brought on by injuries. They are experts at diagnosing and resolving many soft tissue (muscle, ligament, tendon and nerve) problems.

One method Drs. Ryley and Katie Layden utilize to treat winter sports injuries is the Graston Technique®, an innovative, patented form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization that effectively breaks down scar tissue and connective tissue restrictions. They use specially designed stainless steel instruments to detect and effectively treat areas exhibiting soft tissue fibrosis or chronic inflammation, helping restore the structure and function of the tissue.

The goal of Graston Technique® is to create an inflammatory response and allow remodeling to begin. This approach has decreased the overall time of treatment, quickened rehabilitation/recovery, reduced the need for anti-inflammatory medication, and resolved chronic conditions thought to be permanent.

The Graston Technique® is just one of many individualized treatment approaches offered by the highly trained staff at RAK Chiropractors.

Professional athletes, dedicated amateurs, school athletes, and weekend warriors – adults and children – can contact Drs. Ryley and Katie Layden of RAK Chiropractors in Rochester, MN for winter injury treatment leading to fast, sustainable recovery.

With recent news reports of one of the worst flu seasons ever this year, it is more important than ever to focus on ways to stay healthy. Here are a few tips from Dr. Ryley Layden and Dr. Katie Layden of RAK Chiropractic:

One of the most effective ways to avoid the flu, colds, and other viruses and germs is to wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before preparing food; before eating; after using the toilet; and after sneezing, blowing your nose, or coughing. Washing your hands or using hand sanitizer frequently is the number one way to avoid getting sick.

Getting enough sleep, staying hydrated, and eating well is also especially important during the flu season. Strengthen your immune system so it can fight off germs before you get sick. The staff at RAK Chiropractor can help you assess your risk and assist you in developing a wellness plan.

In addition to recommendations for improved nutrition, exercise, and stress reduction techniques, a chiropractic evaluation can also determine if any spinal alignment problems exist. Unnecessary points of pressure along the spine or on nerves can have a detrimental impact on the immune system. Chiropractic treatment can alleviate unnecessary spinal pressure and increase nerve flow, giving a boost to the immune system. Improvement in spinal alignment can also help respiratory function, also important during the flu season.

Dr. Ryley Layden and Dr. Katie Layden of RAK Chiropractic in Rochester, MN have the expertise and experience necessary to provide adults and children with consultations and treatment designed to improve overall wellness, giving their clients the best defense possible during this cold and flu season.

Dr. Ryley Layden and Dr. Katie Layden of RAK Chiropractic in Rochester, MN know that making merry can lead to sore backs and the U.S. Center for Disease Control knows that thousands of people hurt their backs over the holidays. Don’t be one of them! Watch out for some of the leading causes of back injuries around the holidays.

Avoid carrying heavy luggage and shopping bags. Break the load into smaller bags. It’s worth the extra trips and even the extra fees charged by the airlines for additional bags. In the end it is a small price to pay.

Watch out for ice! It is easy to slip on sidewalks and streets during this time of year. Wear shoes and boots with adequate tread. Dress shoes don’t usually offer that protection, so consider carrying your dress shoes until you reach your destination.

Maintain your best posture, keeping your spine as straight as possible, during long trips in cars or on planes. If traveling by car, stop and get out and stretch at least every hour. Get up and walk often during long plane rides.

Don’t over do snow shoveling. Shovel the snow as it falls. Avoid waiting until it has all fallen, leaving a heavy load. Take breaks while you shovel.

Minimize becoming overwhelmed and stressed. Easier said than done, but stress can instigate and aggravate back pain. Take it easy on yourself and others this holiday season.

In a WRECK?… RAK can help!

RAK Chiropractic has been serving the Rochester MN 55906/55901 with highly individualized and specialized chiropractic care. RAK Chiropractic combines chiropractic care with physical therapy, athletic therapy, nutrition and lifestyle coaching to promote healthy living for the entire family. Dr. Ryley Layden and Dr. Katie Layden provide sports chiropractic and soft tissue treatments to athletes and individuals, pediatric, pre and post-natal care in Southeast Minnesota. With the knowledge of the doctors at RAK they also specialize in Auto Accident rehabilitation.

A car accident can be stressful and damaging not only to your vehicle but also to your health.

Following an auto accident the first few questions and thoughts you have are:

1 – how bad is my car damaged?
2 – how bad is their car damaged?
3 – what are the costs going to be?
4 – who was at fault and going to pay?
…usually the last thought for someone is how am I feeling and how am I going to feel?

Injuries sustained during an auto accident can become life alternating and debilitating if not treated correctly right away. Todays’ cars are designed to withstand the forces of an auto accident and have minimal damage following a crash. When a car does not ‘crumble’ something/someone has to take the force … the passengers! Think of a racecar when they get into a wreck – the car explodes into pieces and the driver more often than not walks away! Those cars are designed to take the force from the crash so that the driver does not.

Auto Accident injuries may show themselves as pain and stiffness are common, but other symptoms can include headaches, neck pain, numbness and tingling, arm pain, nausea, dizziness, vision changes, low back pain, sciatica, difficulty concentrating, difficulty swallowing, jaw pain, sore throat, hoarse voice, insomnia, anxiety, light headedness, ringing in the ears, shoulder pain or wrist pain.

The symptoms from an auto accident may not always be so clear and may take months or years to develop if never treated correctly.

No matter how minor the crash seems to be, getting evaluated for a spinal injury and seeking care if needed from a chiropractor as soon as possible following the accident can greatly improve your chances for a full recovery.

Studies done at the University Department of Orthopedic Surgery in Bristol, UK have shown “43% percent of patients will suffer long-term symptoms following ‘whiplash’ injury, for which no conventional medical treatment has proven to be effective.”

More research was done by the same department in Bristol, UK to determine the effects of chiropractic care in a group of 28 patients who had been referred with chronic ‘whiplash’ syndrome. The results were “twenty-six (93%) patients improved following chiropractic treatment.” This research clearly shows chiropractic care is the most effective choice for neck pain following a car accident or any type of whiplash injury.

If you have been in an auto accident, you need a doctor who is trained in the biomechanics of the human body; someone who treats these injuries everyday. In addition, x-rays can be taken to find out if there has been any structural damage. In our office, we evaluate auto accident victims frequently and make any appropriate referrals to other health care providers if needed.

If you or anyone you know has suffered from a whiplash injury or has any aches and pains from a car accident or a fall go see a chiropractor immediately.

Patients come into our chiropractic office that after a whiplash injury from a car accident first go to their medical doctor. When you look at the research this does not make sense. Studies done at the University Department of Orthopedic Surgery in Bristol, UK has shown “43% percent of patients will suffer long-term symptoms following ‘whiplash’ injury, for which no conventional medical treatment has proven to be effective.”

By conventional medical treatment the author means physical therapy, drugs and surgery. These treatments are all viable and necessary for the right conditions. If you snapped your arm in half and came to my office, we would recommend you go to the emergency room and see a medical doctor for surgery. Going to a chiropractor’s office for a broken arm poking out of the skin is the same as going to a medical doctor’s office for a whiplash injury. Broken bones are outside my area of expertise but whiplash injuries are the exact type of condition chiropractor’s are extensively trained to treat.

When you are in a whiplash injury the bones in your spine are knocked out of alignment. There is no drug in the world that is going to put them back in alignment. The only treatment that will put those bones back in alignment is a chiropractic adjustment. These misalignments are serious because they cause soft tissue injury and the body responds to this injury by healing the area with a process that is called the fibrosis of repair. The body will start laying down fibrotic tissue to heal the injured soft tissue.

If you do not get these misalignments corrected at a chiropractic office, your body will heal out of alignment. This can lead to a serious secondary condition called degenerative joint disease and chronic pain. The longer the fibrotic tissue is allowed to cement the spine out of alignment, the longer it will take to correct the misalignments. If you wait too long and there is too much degeneration in the spinal joints sometimes correction is no longer possible. The joints allow the bones to move and if the joint is destroyed the bone can no longer move. This is the reason 43% of whiplash patients have chronic pain if they don’t go see a chiropractor.

Research was done by the same department in Bristol, UK to determine the effects of chiropractic in a group of 28 patients who had been referred with chronic ‘whiplash’ syndrome. The results were “twenty-six (93%) patients improved following chiropractic treatment.” This research clearly shows chiropractic care is the most effective choice for neck pain following a car accident or any type of whiplash injury.

If you or anyone you know has suffered from a whiplash injury it could be from a car accident or a fall go see a chiropractor immediately.
